TALK: "Ocean Escapades: A Couple Crossing an Ocean"  Rosalind Chaston & Andy Hodgson

Andy and Rosalind are an ocean rowing couple who have weathered all kinds of storms and come out the other side stronger.

In 2018, Andy became the first person to row solo around Britain and spent 174 days alone at sea. On his return, he met Rosalind and they decided to team up for the next expedition. 3 years of preparation led them to the start line of their Atlantic Row. They rowed alone out into the night and didn't see land again for 46 days on the other side of the Atlantic.

13:00 - 13:30

TALK: An Audacious Voyage - Conrad Humphreys

Conrad Humphreys is a triple round the world yachtsman, who became the 5th British sailor in history to complete the legendary Vendee Globe. In his most recent adventure, using traditional navigation equipment and surviving off the same meager rations as Captain Bligh, Conrad and a cast of nine were cast adrift in this tiny open boat. Their mission, to survive and safely navigate across 4000 miles of open ocean to recreate one of the greatest survival stories in British history.

15:00 - 15:30

TALK: "The first ever around the world by scooter and sidecar"  Matt Bishop and Reece Gilkes - The Sidecar Guys

Ever imagined what it would be like traveling across 10 time zones, in blizzard-like conditions at temperatures as low as -45*C on a city commuter scooter and barn-built sidecar? Or perhaps breaking down in the Sahara desert with zero mechanical expertise only to finally discover what a bearing is? Matt Bishop and Reece Gilkes are The Sidecar Guys. They’re known as The Sidecar Guys because they hold the very niche Guinness World Record for the longest-ever journey by scooter and sidecar and are the first people to circumnavigate the planet on a scooter with a sidecar.

The Stuntbag Company gives you the chance to jump from a high tower onto a professional stunt bag. Anyone over the age of 6 can try it and absolutely everyone loves to watch. It's the ultimate land-based freefall experience and we call it - FREEDROP.

Our tower allows you to jump from 3m and 6m. Your first jump is from 3 metres - if you jump well you can jump from 6
meters. We run 30-minute sessions with groups going through together. Within the session, you get a full briefing where we tell you a bit about how the Stunt bags work and where we use them!

We then teach you how to jump and land correctly. You get 3 jumps, two jumps from 3 metres and the 3rd jump from 6 metres ( if you jump well from 3m and are aged 8 years and older).

To take part you need to be aged 6 and over, in good health with no injuries and not be under the influence of anything more than caffeine! Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Those aged 6-8 will be able to jump from the lower platform.

Harrier are thrilled to be hosting the Trail Running Zone at the National Outdoor Expo again for 2024! They've got a fantastic weekend of trail sessions planned at their stand B65!

Saturday 23rd March

10am - Kate Parker - How To Use Poles

More info

Using poles for your trail running or hiking could help revolutionise your outdoor adventures. But
how do you find out which poles are best for you and how do you get started?
Harrier Founder, Kate Parker, will lead this practical workshop on how to use poles. Suitable for
beginners and experienced alike, she’ll share the differences between aluminium and carbon,
fixed and adjustable lengths, the benefits of using poles and, importantly, practical exercises to
get you started.

11am - Ronnie Staton on Running The Spine

More info

What an earth is the winter spine race all about, why is it so captivating?! Ronnie will discuss his
latest adventure from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders following the
268 mile Pennine Way. The intense highs of Cross Fell at sunrise, the desperate lows of sleep
deprivation in 16 hours of darkness- and everything in between- including an unexpected
friendship formed.

12pm - Dave Taylor on Running The Big Rounds

More info

For many fell runners, completing the Bob Graham Round is the pinnacle of their goals or
achievements. Dave talks about his experiences on the Bob Graham, Paddy Buckley and
Charlie Ramsay rounds and gives advice on what they entail, the planning and logistics involved
and how to train effectively.

1pm - Stephen Reid’s Guide To Sliding Down Hills (How to have fun in the outdoors!)

More info

Stephen will take you on a fun journey going right back into his childhood and sharing stories
about the role the outdoors has played in his life.
He’ll be mixing the serious with the fun, covering topics like growing up in Northern Ireland
towards the end of the troubles and how that relates to the outdoors.

Why bullying is one of the reasons he started running in the first place, his trauma at being

robbed of victory during the 1996 3-legged race at school sports day, how running played a role
in getting him interested in business when he was just 14. And the time he and three friends

became excellent sprinters the night they thought they might get murdered up a dark lane.
He’ll also share why he started taking running seriously in his early 20s and how it's one of

the most important things he does in order to be happy, healthy, productive and creative.

How running completely changed his life and career thanks to social media.

The upsides and downsides of running an outdoors YouTube channel.

Why he nearly quit running in his mid-30s and what brought him back.

Finally why he thinks everyone should try sliding down a hill once in a while.

2pm - Mubarak & Homayra Sheikh | Muslim Runners: Diversity In The Outdoors - practical steps we can all take to get more people out on the trails.

More info

Husband and wife team Mubarak and Homayra Sheikh will join Mary from Harrier for an informal
Q&A discussing diversity in the outdoors.
We’ll learn more about their passion for trail running and hiking and how they are using this
passion to inspire others to explore the outdoors.
We’ll also discuss practical steps we can all take to help diversity in our outdoor spaces and why
representation is important.

Sunday 24th March

10am - Ronnie Staton’s Guide to Tackling Multi-Day Challenges & Events

More info

Pulling on over a decade of ultra running coaching Ronnie will discuss the different approaches
possible to achieve success at a multi-day event- it’s more achievable than many suspect.
What does the training involve and how do you tackle each day as it comes? Using feedback
from those he has coached and his close ultra running friends Ronnie is able to provide a
rounded approach from others rather than just his own experience.

11.30am - Stephen J Reid: Social Media and Content Creation for the Outdoors

More info

An entry level masterclass for anyone who wants to improve their ability to take photographs
and make videos outdoors. Stephen will talk about the equipment he uses and how to match it
to the right conditions and locations. Tips for using cameras, phones, action cameras, 360
cameras and drones for filming.
How to view the world as a photographer to improve your compositions and how to think like a
filmmaker to keep your audience engaged.
The importance of breaking free from trends and finding your own voice and style.
How to edit videos, including how to edit on mobile. The importance of sound, music and colour
grading.
Why sometimes it’s best that you leave the camera at home and finally why the content we put
out into the world matters more than we think.

12pm - Dave Taylor’s Brew With A View

More info

One of the attractions of trail and fell running is exploring beautiful and remote places. Dave
often includes a stop for a "brew with a view" on his easy or rest days. He discusses the
lightweight kit that he uses for these "fastpacking" type adventures.

Photon sit on top kayak launch

New for the 2023 season Riber are proud to launch the PHOTON Sit On Top Kayak is the first of its kind to be made in the Peak District, UK. Keeping a timeless shape, Riber have designed the Photon Sit on Top Kayak to be packed with features. The ample hull width increases the stability on flat water. The integrated skeg cuts through the waves and the lightweight hull provides excellent tracking resulting in an effortless paddle for smooth sea use.

The PHOTON Sit On Top Kayak includes a unique bucket storage hatches with soft closure. This hatch is ideal for keeping essentials and valuables safe whilst out paddling. There are handles either side with paddle holders and an ergonomic grab handle at the rear.

In the rear storage area there are two drainage holes which means it is suitable for use with the Sit on Top Kayak Trolley which allows you to transport the kayak without the need to use a strap to secure the boat.

The PHOTON Sit On Top Kayak is made from blow moulded HDPE in Derbsyhire, UK. We select our colour range carefully to mitigate any potential colour fade over time and use UV stable pigments. The core hull is a blown in one piece mould ensuring the best possibly buoyancy and rigidity. This kayak comes with a users guide which includes details of the full one year manufacturers warranty we offer.

This kayak has a central drinks holder and space to fit an optional Rod Holder. It has five drainage holes spaced across the boat. There are several footrest points for added comfort when paddling. Also, there are a number of D-rings which can be used to secure paddles leashes or other similar items. The rear bungee storage area is ideal for any trolley.

The PHOTON Sit On Top Kayak is stable on flat waters. Consequently, the curvature and rocker of the hull mean it also performs great in the sea and amongst the waves.

The Bushcraft Zone

Sponsored by

Centre for Ethnoecology

Ethnoecology explores the relationship between human societies and their environments, emphasising the cultural dimensions of ecological knowledge. Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) is a central component of ethnoecology, encompassing the wisdom and practices developed by indigenous and local communities over generations. These knowledge systems are deeply rooted in a profound understanding of local ecosystems, fostering sustainable interactions between people and their environments.

Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in connecting with nature and ancestral skills, leading to the rise of bushcraft as a popular pastime. Bushcraft enthusiasts immerse themselves in the outdoors, drawing on elements of TEK for survival skills and sustainable living. Fire lighting, natural crafts, and campfire cooking are prime examples of bushcraft intertwining with traditional ecological knowledge. Through these practices, enthusiasts gain practical skills, a profound appreciation for the environment and a sense of connection to ancestral ways of life.

As the popularity of bushcraft grows, it becomes a bridge between contemporary society and traditional ecological knowledge, fostering a renewed respect for the intricate balance between humans and nature. The resurgence of these practices highlights the timeless relevance of ethnoecology and the enduring wisdom embedded in traditional ecological knowledge.

Kate MacRae

Kate MacRae

Kate MacRae, more commonly known as WildlifeKate, is a British wildlife educator, photographer, outdoor and environmental enthusiast who shares her passion for nature through a variety of media. Newly based in South Wales, Kate is now living her dream with 3 acres to develop for nature.
Kate has dedicated years to bringing the natural world closer to people, especially through the lens of cameras she sets up around her garden, local habitats, and broader landscapes. She’s well-known for her live wildlife cams, which broadcast real-time footage of birds, mammals, and other animals, allowing viewers to get an up-close look at the daily lives and behaviours of British wildlife. Innovative camera projects have bought us the first ever footage of a wild badger giving birth, Wrens nesting in an old hiking boot and nuthatches raising a family in a nest box decorated like a sitting room!
Her journey began as a school teacher, where she incorporated nature into her teaching to inspire children to engage with the environment. This passion soon extended beyond the classroom as she started using technology to document and showcase wildlife. WildlifeKate uses social media, her website, and appearances on television shows like Springwatch, Autumnwatch, The One Show and Countryfile, to name but a few, to share her knowledge and excitement about the natural world. She’s also involved in collaborations with conservation projects and offers guidance on setting up wildlife-friendly spaces in gardens, making it accessible for anyone to bring a bit of nature to their own homes.
WildlifeKate’s work is grounded in a commitment to conservation and environmental education, aiming to inspire appreciation and stewardship for nature and the outdoors in audiences of all ages.

Kate Humble

Kate Humble

Kate Humble was born in 1968 and grew up in rural Berkshire in a house next to a farm. She had what she describes as a ‘proper childhood’ – building camps, racing snails, climbing trees, interspersed with trips to A&E to patch up things when they broke. At the neighbouring farm she learnt to ride horses and developed a lifelong passion for mucking out. At 18 she left school and home, and worked odd jobs for a year to fund a year travelling in Africa, which, she says, taught her far more than she would ever have learnt at university. On her return to the UK she got her first job in television as a runner and met Producer/Director Ludo Graham who she married in 1992. She travelled whenever she had the opportunity and in 1996 had her first travel article published by ‘The Telegraph’. That same year she got her first job at the BBC as a researcher on ‘Animal Hospital’ and then ‘The Holiday Programme’. It was on her second day in the Holiday office when she was asked by the programme’s editor if she had ever presented before. ‘No,’ she said ‘and nor do I want to.’

Kate has been presenting programmes and writing articles and books for the last twenty years. Her latest credits include Yellowstone: Wildest Winter to Blazing Summer, Back to the Land, Curious Creatures and Extreme Wives with Kate Humble all for BBC Two, Animal Park for BBC One Daytime, The Royal Welsh Show 2018 for BBC One Wales and BBC Four and Wild Things for Sky One. Her latest book Where the Hearth is came out in 2023.

In 2007 she and Ludo moved to a smallholding in Wales and in 2011 set up ‘Humble by Nature’ a rural skills school on a working farm in the Wye Valley. They live with a variety of feathered and furry livestock and three dogs.

Steph Quintrell

Steph Quintrell

Steph Quintrell is Operations manager for non-profit organisation Forces Wives Challenge (FWC), a social enterprise that unites women who have partners in the Armed Forces (serving or veterans) through adventure and challenge. In 2023 with the support of her team of extraordinary forces wives, Steph Quintrell became the world’s first wheelchair dependent person to ride by horseback across the Pyrenees mountains from France to Spain, following the WW2 Freedom trails in what was named the Ride to Freedom expedition.

In 2019, Steph suddenly became very unwell and was subsequently diagnosed with a complex neurological condition, which among other debilitating symptoms, took away her ability to walk or even stand. As a full-time wheelchair user, with limited use in one of her hands, Steph has been determined not to let her disability dictate what she can and can’t do. She is dedicated to demonstrate that with determination, passion, hard work and the correct support, adventure can be accessible for all.

Alongside regularly riding her horse, Steph also takes part in other FWC outdoor challenges such as open water swimming and is keen to continue to push outside of her comfort zone to inspire others to do the same.

Always someone who is looking at the next challenge in life, Steph has also now set up Equine Para-adventures CIC (EPA) alongside her husband Jon and they have big dreams with where they want to take the organisation. Through EPA, Steph will tackle an even tougher challenge in February 2026, which will see EPA’s flagship expedition Ride to Independence. Alongside a team of 5 incredible women, she will aim to become the world’s first wheelchair dependent person to ride by horseback across the Andes, starting in Argentina and finishing in Chile.

Cath has always used exercise as a way of helping her to manage her mental health. She discovered her passion for winter/ice swimming in September 2015 and was immediately hooked, since then Cath swims as much as possible and she refers to it as her “Reset Button” and says “to make Cath happy, just add cold water!”

Gemma Davis (Camp Curiosity)

Camp Curiosity aims to provide opportunities for children and families to get outdoors, to provide some of the essential skills and confidence to encourage adults to take their little people for outdoor adventures. Inspired by their little 8 yr old explorer, Marthy, Gem and Phill live as much of their lives outdoors as possible and when not running events, parties or attending festivals they can usually be found in a rockpool, up a mountain or in a woodland where they love outdoor cooking and immersing themselves in showing Marthy as much of the world as possible.
