TALK: "Ocean Escapades: A Couple Crossing an Ocean"  Rosalind Chaston & Andy Hodgson

Andy and Rosalind are an ocean rowing couple who have weathered all kinds of storms and come out the other side stronger.

In 2018, Andy became the first person to row solo around Britain and spent 174 days alone at sea. On his return, he met Rosalind and they decided to team up for the next expedition. 3 years of preparation led them to the start line of their Atlantic Row. They rowed alone out into the night and didn't see land again for 46 days on the other side of the Atlantic.

13:00 - 13:30

TALK: An Audacious Voyage - Conrad Humphreys

Conrad Humphreys is a triple round the world yachtsman, who became the 5th British sailor in history to complete the legendary Vendee Globe. In his most recent adventure, using traditional navigation equipment and surviving off the same meager rations as Captain Bligh, Conrad and a cast of nine were cast adrift in this tiny open boat. Their mission, to survive and safely navigate across 4000 miles of open ocean to recreate one of the greatest survival stories in British history.

15:00 - 15:30

TALK: "The first ever around the world by scooter and sidecar"  Matt Bishop and Reece Gilkes - The Sidecar Guys

Ever imagined what it would be like traveling across 10 time zones, in blizzard-like conditions at temperatures as low as -45*C on a city commuter scooter and barn-built sidecar? Or perhaps breaking down in the Sahara desert with zero mechanical expertise only to finally discover what a bearing is? Matt Bishop and Reece Gilkes are The Sidecar Guys. They’re known as The Sidecar Guys because they hold the very niche Guinness World Record for the longest-ever journey by scooter and sidecar and are the first people to circumnavigate the planet on a scooter with a sidecar.

adrenaline drop

The Stuntbag Company gives you the chance to jump from a high tower onto a professional stunt bag. Anyone over the age of 6 can try it and absolutely everyone loves to watch. It's the ultimate land-based freefall experience and we call it - FREEDROP.

Our tower allows you to jump from 3m and 6m. Your first jump is from 3 metres - if you jump well you can jump from 6
meters. We run 30-minute sessions with groups going through together. Within the session, you get a full briefing where we tell you a bit about how the Stunt bags work and where we use them!

We then teach you how to jump and land correctly. You get 3 jumps, two jumps from 3 metres and the 3rd jump from 6 metres ( if you jump well from 3m and are aged 8 years and older).

To take part you need to be aged 6 and over, in good health with no injuries and not be under the influence of anything more than caffeine! Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Those aged 6-8 will be able to jump from the lower platform.

Those 8 and over will be able to jump from the top platform after 2
successful jumps from the lower platform.

More info

Stephen will take you on a fun journey going right back into his childhood and sharing stories
about the role the outdoors has played in his life.
He’ll be mixing the serious with the fun, covering topics like growing up in Northern Ireland
towards the end of the troubles and how that relates to the outdoors.

Why bullying is one of the reasons he started running in the first place, his trauma at being

robbed of victory during the 1996 3-legged race at school sports day, how running played a role
in getting him interested in business when he was just 14. And the time he and three friends

became excellent sprinters the night they thought they might get murdered up a dark lane.
He’ll also share why he started taking running seriously in his early 20s and how it's one of

the most important things he does in order to be happy, healthy, productive and creative.

How running completely changed his life and career thanks to social media.

The upsides and downsides of running an outdoors YouTube channel.

Why he nearly quit running in his mid-30s and what brought him back.

The importance of breaking free from trends and finding your own voice and style.

Keeping a timeless shape, Riber have designed the Photon Sit on Top Kayak to be packed with features. The ample hull width increases the stability on flat water. The PHOTON Sit On Top Kayak includes a unique bucket storage hatches with soft closure. This hatch is ideal for keeping essentials and valuables safe whilst out paddling. There are handles either side with paddle holders and an ergonomic grab handle at the rear.

In the rear storage area there are two drainage holes which means it is suitable for use with the Sit on Top Kayak Trolley which allows you to transport the kayak without the need to use a strap to secure the boat.

The PHOTON Sit On Top Kayak is made from blow moulded HDPE in Derbsyhire, UK. We select our colour range carefully to mitigate any potential colour fade over time and use UV stable pigments. The core hull is a blown in one piece mould ensuring the best possibly buoyancy and rigidity. This kayak comes with a users guide which includes details of the full one year manufacturers warranty we offer.

This kayak has a central drinks holder and space to fit an optional Rod Holder. It has five drainage holes spaced across the boat. There are several footrest points for added comfort when paddling. Also, there are a number of D-rings which can be used to secure paddles leashes or other similar items. The rear bungee storage area is ideal for any trolley.

The PHOTON Sit On Top Kayak is stable on flat waters. Consequently, the curvature and rocker of the hull mean it also performs great in the sea and amongst the waves.

The Bushcraft Zone

Centre for Ethnoecology

Ethnoecology explores the relationship between human societies and their environments, emphasising the cultural dimensions of ecological knowledge. Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) is a central component of ethnoecology, encompassing the wisdom and practices developed by indigenous and local communities over generations. These knowledge systems are deeply rooted in a profound understanding of local ecosystems, fostering sustainable interactions between people and their environments.

Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in connecting with nature and ancestral skills, leading to the rise of bushcraft as a popular pastime. Bushcraft enthusiasts immerse themselves in the outdoors, drawing on elements of TEK for survival skills and sustainable living. Fire lighting, natural crafts, and campfire cooking are prime examples of bushcraft intertwining with traditional ecological knowledge. Through these practices, enthusiasts gain practical skills, a profound appreciation for the environment and a sense of connection to ancestral ways of life.

As the popularity of bushcraft grows, it becomes a bridge between contemporary society and traditional ecological knowledge, fostering a renewed respect for the intricate balance between humans and nature. The resurgence of these practices highlights the timeless relevance of ethnoecology and the enduring wisdom embedded in traditional ecological knowledge.

Visit the website here: https://www.centreforethnoecology.org/

At this year's Expo, we will be hosting the following organisations;

We specialise in indigenous skills; the Bushcraft we practice and teach is that of the aboriginal Britain. We study of our early ancestors to teach a set of skills and knowledge that can be used in the natural world and necessary in understanding our role within it. https://www.intowilderness.co.uk/

We are passionate about positive experiences and life skills. We run courses and events to provide skills and team building for all ages and abilities. We offer a variety of bushcraft courses, archery and crossbow sessions and blacksmithing.

The British Mountaineering Council have two of their GB Paraclimbing Athletes over at the Traverse Wall who will be running facilitated game and workshop sessions on the wall throughout the day.

Both James Rudge and Richard Slocock are qualified Climbing Wall Instructors and are experience climbing coaches.

Sign up on the day for the workshop games sessions at set times, or turn up between the coached sessions for a casual go facilitated by the two athletes too. Suitable for adults and children, this is a chance to learn both the foundation skills required to develop your climbing from a beginner level and also to hone pre-existing skills for those looking to take their climbing to the next level.

The climbing tower will be assisted by outdoor experts and will be running turn-up and climb all day sessions.

Follow the BMC here and follow GB Climbing here

James Rudge is a member of the GB Paraclimbing Team as well as a qualified Climbing Wall Instructor. After many years practising parkour, James decided to start giving climbing a go. Born without the lower part of his left arm,  he began competing in the National Paraclimbing Series. Now he competes internationally for GB. James runs a charity called GRIT Collective, which puts on inclusive climbing sessions for people with physical impairments and learning difficulties. James will also be doing a talk at the BMC stand (opposite the Traverse Wall) at 1pm on Sunday called ‘Climbing is for Everyone'.

Richard Slocock is a visually impaired GB Paraclimber and Climbing Coach. He has competed for GB Climbing at an international level and has his own personal training business. In 2023, he won silver in the Paraclimbing World Championships in the B2 category. Richard will also be doing a talk at the BMC stand (opposite the Traverse Wall) at 1pm on Saturday called ‘Blind Determination’.

Cath Pendleton

Cath Pendleton

Cath is a Guinness World Record Holder for the most Southerly Ice Swim (Female), she achieved this record by becoming the first person in the world to swim an ice mile inside the Antarctic Polar circle in February 2020. Her story was captured by the BBC for a documentary about ordinary people achieving extraordinary things, titled “The Merthyr Mermaid” and is available to watch on BBC iPlayer – The Merthyr Mermaid. Cath has always used exercise as a way of helping her to manage her mental health. She discovered her passion for winter/ice swimming in September 2015 and was immediately hooked, since then Cath swims as much as possible and she refers to it as her “Reset Button” and says “to make Cath happy, just add cold water!”

From camping on the side of a cliff face to walking the wing of an aeroplane, climbing glaciers, surviving alone in the wilderness and achieving three Guinness World Records as a professional roller skater, Tinuke will fearlessly take on any challenge.

Growing up without representation in adventure TV, Tinuke is committed to showing diverse audiences that anyone, regardless of background, can experience the thrill of adventure. By sharing her own story and encouraging others to push their boundaries, Tinuke is opening doors for diverse audiences to connect with nature, discover their inner strength, and embark on journeys of self-discovery and smashing our self-imposed limitations.

Steve Backshall

Steve Backshall

As one of the busiest presenters on television, Steve Backshall is a familiar face and house-hold name, perhaps best-known for his phenomenally successful Deadly series.

An all-action hero, Steve has led overseas expeditions and explored some of the most incredible places on the planet. He recently travelled across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans filming Whale for Sky TV, a ground-breaking programme tracking our most iconic, yet threatened, species. He has also appeared in Our Changing Planet for BBC One, an ambitious seven-year series documenting six of the planet’s most threatened ecosystems.

His most recent book, Deep Blue published in 2023, is a blend of memoir, travel, and marine and environmental science that takes us on a tour of the many worlds of aquatic life: from underwater deserts and rainforests to the evolution of ocean heroes like the sea turtle and the Great White, to the rapidly declining state of white polar seas and coral reefs.

As if that wasn’t enough, in 2023, Steve showed immense resilience, determination, drive, and ambition to break a new world record – for the fastest time to paddle the length of the Thames River.

Lewis Tingle

Lewis Tingle

My approach to bushcraft is a humble and simple one. I go out into nature to make journeys and connect with the landscape I find myself in. In essence, I look to knowledge and skills that can bridge the connection with nature and not impeach it. True bushcraft should always be subtle in the background and supportive of the environment in which we are part. I founded Into Wilderness Bushcraft to share my insights and passion for the outdoors with others through first-hand experiences of Nature. https://www.intowilderness.co.uk

SUP it and Sea

SUP it and Sea

SUP It & Sea is the joint name of Dave and Sophie, who were the first pair to paddleboard 1700km from Land’s End to John o’Groats. They started the journey two months after meeting, using a combination of coastal and inland waters to achieve their goal in 89 days. Not content with stopping there, what started as a jest on paddleboards far out at sea, then became a triple navigation of the country, hiking back through Winter to Land’s End and then cycling back to John o’Groats – all in under a year and clocking up over 5800km in total. The pair had less than a year’s paddleboarding experience, paddled some of the UK’s most dangerous coastlines, canals, SUPed under the Severn Bridges and tackled Scotland’s Northeast Coast in Autumn. They want to prove that you don’t have to be superhuman or an athlete to do incredible things.

Dave is also an avid skier, yoga teacher having trained in India, has completed two Caminos across Spain and Portugal, and is currently climbing the Seven Summits. He suffers from osteoarthritis, is currently on the list to get both hips replaced, and aims to show that arthritis shouldn’t be a barrier to outside activities and adventure.

Sophie is also an avid Wild Swimmer as part of her local Bluetits Flock. Post SUP it and Sea she cycled the length of Wales after discovering a passion for cycling when doing LEJOG. Sophie is currently planning some more SUP expeditions and wants to continue to raise awareness of Mental Health by telling her story through adventure

David Haze

David Haze

SUP Man of the Year 2023 & Ocean Activist of the Year 2023

After losing his identity and hitting absolute rock bottom whilst serving his second prison sentence, David Haze (aka The Nomadic Paddler) was ready to roll over and give up on life. Hopes and dreams were long gone, and he had become a shell of a man he once was whilst sitting in a 6×4 prison cell surrounded by so much failure and negativity.

Through a chance encounter with an inspiring woman who saw David as a lost human being in need of some guidance, he was inspired to embark on a journey of self-discovery to reconnect with himself through adventure. Finding purpose and drive once again, David stepped out of prison in April 2020 and despite the struggles of a global lock-down he achieved his first 4 world records within this first year of his release. David Haze was once a former prisoner but now stands proud as 9x world record holding Stand Up Paddle Boarding adventurer, attempting world firsts and world records.

However, it is not all about the pursuit of records and glory. Adventure has transformed David’s life; it is his tool for growth, change and ultimately his rehabilitation. With the platform he has been handed, he hopes his journey can highlight the importance of reform and rehabilitation and change perspectives on people like himself.

David strives to encourage more people to reconnect with themselves through the power of adventure by taking that small step out of their comfort zone proving that we are all much more than our pasts, our mistakes and demonstrating that we are the only ones in control of own our destinies.

Honor Burgess

Honor Burgess

I’m Honor Burgess, also known as @hon_outdoors, a 22-year-old outdoors and adventure enthusiast.

During my final year at university, I launched my page as a personal commitment to explore the outdoors regularly. It served as a reminder of the incredible joy I experienced each time I embarked on an adventure. From this moment onward, I began to reclaim my spark back which I had lost due to my mental health due to anxiety and minor depression from 2019 to 2021.

As my community grew on socials, I shifted towards posting content aimed at educating and inspiring others to embrace the outdoors, discover its joys, and reap the numerous benefits nature provides on your mental and physical health.

My mission is to empower the younger generation, especially within the 18-25 age group, since there is a lack of representation. By sharing my experiences, adventures, thoughts, and feelings, I aim to address the gap in motivating and inspiring this audience.

My passion for the outdoors traces back to my involvement in Ten Tors during my school years, but it truly rekindled in February of 2023 on my birthday trip in the Peak District. Since then, I’ve made it a priority to immerse myself in outdoor activities such as hiking, or simply unwinding in nature by taking cold water dips.

I believe I can contribute valuable insights into navigating the outdoors for both physical and mental health in your twenties

Anita Kerwin-Nye

Anita Kerwin-Nye

In her most recent role as Executive Director YHA, Anita led on the development of the organisation’s 10 Year Strategy which has inclusion and access at its core. She managed their £40 million income generation approaches across trading, membership and fundraising – successfully navigating the challenges of COVID.

Anita founded the DEFRA funded Generation Green programme, which connected over 100 000 young people to nature and the National Parks, creating and saving jobs, and building an aspirant workforce for a green recovery. She worked with Ramblers, BMC and OS to develop YHA Walks – leading two successful Festivals that reconnected YHA with its walking roots and routes.

Building on this Anita starts her new role as Director of South Downs National Park in January 2024. Balancing protection of the landscape with getting more people into the Park.

Recognised as a national expert in access Anita initiated Outdoor Citizens – a community of practice turning dial on access to outdoors. She is an award winning champion of access for all and is herself a role model for the outdoors being for fat and fifty plus – not just the fit and fleecy.

Anita’s consultancy supports a portfolio of outdoor organisations and is helping charities and brands extend their reach, diversity and impact while balancing with revenue and the challenges of costs.

She is a prospective policy wonk: able to take a long view on what next. Anita chooses to shape the policy and funding environment to suit the cause rather than drifting mission to fit the money.

She is a bit naughty. Sometimes feisty. And quite funny.

Often outside – literally and metaphorically – she’ll always bring a new view.

to the world’s highest mountains. Raised by a single mom, Marta’s
childhood was humble, instilling values of hard work that led to her
remarkable story.

A teenage trip to London lit a fire in Marta, revealing a bigger world

and discovered her love for exploring new places. Sharing her adventures
on social media, she became the go-to person for hiking tips and
inspiration in a community fascinated by her mix of corporate life and
global exploration.

As Marta continued her travels, simply ticking off countries wasn’t
enough. Hungry for more, she set two significant goals. First, was to
conquer the 7 Summits challenge, of which she already completed 6,
including the mighty Mount Everest. The second challenge was ‘The Crown
of Europe,’ the highest peak in each European country, with half the
challenge already done. To make her journey even more unforgettable,
Marta organized group expeditions, bringing over 150 enthusiasts on 15+
trips.

Marta’s story isn’t just about reaching mountaintops; it’s a push for
action. Through social media and talks, she shares her story to inspire

Deon Barrett

Deon Barrett

I had a very conflicted childhood due to a lack of identity through racial and discrimination, bullying and the lack of a positive role model. Over time this caused deep depression and anxiety, which led to suicide attempts at an early age.

Growing up in the urban outskirts of the Southwest of London and due to my environment, I found myself descending on the wrong path, leading to being embedded in the local gang culture. Luckily through my mother’s passion to travel and bring me along I was able to be exposed to new landscapes.

Acquiring academic education in school was not my forte in my early years, except for getting into trouble. Learning has always been a difficult endeavour for me, and this continues to be a challenge. After I was diagnosed with Dyslexia this enabled me to adopt an unorthodox approach to learning.

In January 2022 I set out to inspire the younger generation through my own adversity that I have faced, in doing so created the “True North project” and with that sharing the idea of being able to “find your true north”.

I joined the British Armed Forces in May of 2015 where I had gone into phase one training. This drove me to being resilient but most of all reinstalled my love for the outdoors.  I had the opportunity to travel the world and enjoyed some fantastic roles that a lot of people may not get to experience.

After eight years I had decided to leave in pursuit of growing and scaling up the True North Project. I felt it was time as I knew there was a lot of work to be done in creating outdoor opportunities for others.

As a black man interested in the outdoors, I have set out to empower others like me through my various expedition. I am undertaking extreme expeditions into some of the world’s most remote and high-risk environments. The reason for choosing these areas is because there is an underrepresentation of black people within outdoor spaces and across many different disciplines, and this is something I want to challenge. I am working on becoming one of the first black brits to stand at the summit of mount Everest by 2025.

I believe that it is in our best interest that we endeavour to bring outdoor education to the forefront of all young minds. With this thought in mind I set out to research what our nations schools have in place to bring outdoor learning to their students through what I call the “YOUTH INITIATIVE”. It came to my attention that schools rarely have the support or have the backing to implement this within their curriculum. Unfortunately, these efforts are currently arranged by the schools independently with very limited assistance from outside resources, leaving it up to the teachers to arrange days out in their own time. The caveat being that there is also not enough time spent training staff throughout the established schools in becoming outdoor leaders themselves at some capacity. This is an ongoing effort of mine with plans to make an impact to public schools in cities around the UK.

I feel that outdoor education is as important to students as other subjects we currently teach and it is paramount to bring awareness to this. So my campaign to work with government and the Department for Education will hopefully make the difference needed.

I am also available to help in creating opportunities, safe trips to the mountains to further develop the schools aim to increase the value of their students within the great outdoors. I believe that this campaign will boost self-esteem, maturity and provide essential life skills by equipping young people with the right tools and attitude to promote their own mental resilience.

She currently sits on the Equity Steering Committee for the British Mountaineering Council, focussing on creating better opportunities for people through social change.

The group also run training days and skills weekends in leadership and teamwork, which also address the under-representation of black instructors in the industry. Rhiane hopes to continue the growth of BGH across the UK, which also includes chapters in London and the Midlands, and to work with likeminded groups internationally.

Gemma Davis (Camp Curiosity)

Gemma Davis (Camp Curiosity)

Camp Curiosity came into being in March 2022 and is borne out of a love for the outdoors, and more importantly, giving children the opportunity to explore nature.
Gem’s background is education and she left teaching to manage the Education Resource Centre at Fiddlers Ferry power station where she managed the nature reserve, organised community engagement sessions and outdoor events. Camp Curiosity aims to provide opportunities for children and families to get outdoors, to provide some of the essential skills and confidence to encourage adults to take their little people for outdoor adventures. Inspired by their little 8 yr old explorer, Marthy, Gem and Phill live as much of their lives outdoors as possible and when not running events, parties or attending festivals they can usually be found in a rockpool, up a mountain or in a woodland where they love outdoor cooking and immersing themselves in showing Marthy as much of the world as possible.

Sean Conway

Sean Conway

Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Sean had an adventurous upbringing in the Mana Pools National Park with his conservationist game ranger father, Tony. He spent his early years climbing trees and chasing elephants out of his garden, and this unique childhood has been the fuel for his adventurous ambitions.
Well-known for his quirky take on endurance sports and adventures, Sean came to the UK in 2002 with just £100 in his wallet and started working in Cambridge cutting 12,000 cabbages a day and then as a freelance photographer in London, whilst living in a tiny room in London with 7 other people, spending any cash he earned on various travels and bonkers adventures.
Sean famously sold his photography business for just £1 to pursue his dream breaking the world record for cycling around the world, Sean gained sponsorship and set out on this epic adventure on 18th February 2012. After three weeks he was ahead of schedule averaging nearly 180 miles a day. His dreams were shattered in America when a driver hit him causing severe whip lash, concussion, torn ligaments and a compression fracture to the spine. Despite this, Sean continued on dropping to 140 miles per day, changing his goal to get back to London in time for the Olympics and raise money for charity. He made it back with a week to spare, having covered 16,000 miles – 12,000 of them with a fractured spine.
In 2013 he became the first person in history to swim the length of Great Britain, having previously cycled it in 2008. After battling the weather, currents and seemingly endless swarms of jellyfish, Sean and his legendary beard wrote history on November 11 2013, after 135 days at sea.
in 2015, after a failed first attempt at running Britain, he completed the Ultimate British Triathlon when he finished his run from John O’Groats to Land’s End, without undergoing any kind of training in advance.
In 2016 Sean raised the bar once more when he took on the greatest challenge of his life. Starting in April 2016, he completed a self-supported 4000+ mile, continuous Ultra Triathlon that circumnavigates the entire coast of mainland Britain and Discovery Channel followed Sean’s incredible and dangerous journey.
He holds the world record for cycling unsupported across Europe. He completed the 4000 miles route in 24 days, 18 hours and 39 minutes. The documentary can be found on Amazon – Sean Conway’s Europe or Bust. Most recently Sean broke the world record for the most number of Ironmans completed in a row – 102!

Despite these extraordinary successes, Sean knows what it is to struggle and face set-backs.  Endurance challenges really drive Sean forward to learn and improve.  His experiences give depth and power to his engaging presentations on motivation, challenge and developing resilience.

In 2009, Belinda established Explorers Connect to spread the word about the life-changing impact of adventure. Through the network she has encouraged 30,000 ordinary people to engage in outdoor challenges. In 2019 she launched the Adventure Mind conference and network to explore and further promote the positive impact that adventurous activity has on our wellbeing.

She wrote Adventure Revolution: The life-changing power of choosing challenge, the first book to explain the psychology of why adventure is essential to our wellbeing. Drawing on lessons learnt from leading groups into the wilderness and the latest findings in neuroscience and psychology, Belinda shows how adventure has the power to transform the timid into the confident, the addicted into the recovering, and the lost into the intentionally wandering.

He takes modern practices back to their primal roots and shows what can be cooked in the mountains as well as sharing the importance of time outdoors for physical and mental wellbeing.
