We know it’s super hot out there, we have some ideas to trick your mind into being cool, you can immerse yourself in cold adventures from around the world. The first needs some action on your part. Do you even know where your ski gear is?
Here we go, our mini cold festival coming up.
Book an indoor ski session: on the hottest day of the year is a perfect time to learn to ski or brush up your snowboarding skills. It’s super hot outside and you could be in your ski gear! If you do this we definitely need a photo.
Watch the film Everest: you will either be terrified or inspired. The film is based on the true story of a storm on Everest in 1996 which ended in eight fatalities. Further Reading: The story has already been told in two accounts by two of those who were climbing that day; Jon Krakauer, Into Thin Air, and Anatoli Boukreev, The Climb. It’s up to you to work out what actually happened! Watch a true adventure classic, Touching the Void: The true story of two climbers and their life changing journey up the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. Would you cut the rope? Watch one of the many films from the Banff Film Festival: You can choose from tonnes of films and immerse yourself in spectacular snowy mountain ranges. You can sign up and get involved in the local screenings. Note some fees may apply – https://filmfest.banffcentre.ca/welcome
Read Shackleton by Ranulph Fiennes: Discover the story of Ernest Shackleton’s legendary Antarctic expedition through the words of the world’s greatest living explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Ranulph brings the story to life based on his own experiences in this epically harsh environment. This quote sums up his storytelling skills
“To write about Hell, it helps if you have been there.” I went to see Ranulph on his Shackleton Book tour, he could fill an encyclopaedia with his stories, escapades and adventures. If you get a chance book your ticket.
Listen to podcast Outside and Active interviewing Ranulph Fiennes: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/sir-ranulph-fiennes/id1601520776?i=1000546827384 My favourite line from the show was about Mike Stroud “we are starving even more than I had hoped” his chosen topic to study on the expedition was advanced starvation. Random Fact: Ranulph only started using GPS on expeditions in 1991, before that he was using the same equipment as Shackleton.
Listen to Tough Girl Podcast: Meet Preet Chandi nickname Polar Preet. Preet recently became the first woman of colour to complete a 700 mile solo expedition in Antarctica in 40 days. With average temperatures of minus 50. That should keep you cool today! https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/tough-girl-podcast/id1024977070?i=1000551130129
Wild Water Swimming: grab your swimmers, grab a friend and find your nearest place to swim. Check out the site below for locations and safety tips. Top Tip Never go on your own. https://www.wildswimming.co.uk/wild-swimming-for-beginners/ Meet the Ice Man, Wim Hof: this man takes cold to a whole new level. He is an extreme athlete famous for his ability to withstand very low temperatures. He is most known for swimming under ice and prolonged full-body contact with ice and snow. He is also partial to barefoot running in the snow. This will definitely cool you down today. Check out the website and see how you can get involved. https://www.wimhofmethod.com/ Get cocktail making: we have two cocktails for you Frostbite and Runners Revenge (this was made up by my run club). Make yourself a Frostbite cocktail. It’s blue and fruity, packs a punch and takes tequila to another level. It’s the perfect for the heatwave. Mix tequila, blue curaçao liqueur, white crème de cacao liqueur, cream, topped with cherries then add lots of ice. For Runners Revenge add chocolate milk, Kahlua, expresso shot and sprinkle of chilli. Mix with lots of ice. Shake and Enjoy It’s hot outside, but we have filled your mind with cold journeys, snowy mountain scenes, cool cocktails and dreams of your own cold adventures.
Enjoy your hot/cold day Over and Out Nicky Chisholm #pinknicky
