Nigel is the founder of REROOT YOURSELF™ – a detailed look at the science behind nature and wellness, helping busy people with limited time tap into the art of forest bathing and the healing power of nature.
Throughout June I’ll be sharing tips and insights on how to Forest Bathe exclusively on 9KM BY 9AM and the Outside & Active website. A 30-minute forest bathe once or twice a week will help you slow down. It will bring you into the present moment and de-stress and relax you.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL FOREST BATHE LOOK LIKE?
5 STEP PROCESS
The art of forest bathing is the art of connecting with nature through our senses all we have to do is accept the invitation – Mother Nature does the rest.
STEP 1 – LOCATION
You can go the park, but for best results a quiet place free of interruption is ideal.
According to the Japanese a healing forest should have one or more of the following
- Trees
- Humidity
- Luminosity
- Radiant Heat
- Air Current
- Volatile Organic Components Given Off By Trees
- Gratify All Senses
- A Trail
STEP 2 – YOUR INTENTIONS
It is important to come to the forest with your intentions.
- What do you want to achieve from forest bathing today?
- Do you want to relax?
- Do you want to find clarity with a problem you are facing? You can say long-term or short-term intentions.
- Do you want to think about less serious sides of life and play?
STEP 3 – CROSS THE TRESHOLD
Draw a line in the ground or lay down some sticks to create a threshold. As you cross the threshold and enter the forest take a moment to leave behind the ways of being that are no longer serving you.
STEP 4 – ACTIVITIES
There are 100s of activities to do to open your senses and let the forest in – we will cover these in the next videos.
STEP 5 – REFLECT
Integrate the wisdom that you gain in the forest with your everyday life, and create a new way of being.
A 30-minute forest bath will make you more present, de-stress and relax you.
My book, Walking Back To Happiness: The Secret To Alcohol-Free Living & Well-Being and my coaching course Reroot Yourself shows how you can massively improve your mental and physical well-being, through re-connecting or rerooting with the natural world, walking outdoors, watching sunrises, forest bathing and being more mindful about the changes in nature that are happening all around you.
